How to maintain proper work life balance?

One most common problem which is arising for the last few years is maintaining WLB (Work Life Balance). The common symptoms arises because of lack of WLB are sleeplessness, stress, tension, depression, fatigue, disturbance in hunger and digestive system,   anger, conflict with family and friends.

So what is WLB?

In simple term we can say that, mismanagement and lack of time management between professional, family and personal life.

Most of the time people take into consideration only two aspects while talking about WLB that is Profession or work and family. However, while observing at a macro level, the third most important factor which is must to consider is personal of self care. For many people family life and personal life are same but that‘s not a fact. Many problems arising in our life is because of lack of self care. People give their best at their work and family but they forget to think about themselves and that’s where they lack in satisfaction which usually cause problems like anger, stress, tension, lack of hunger, sleeplessness which may cause severe diseases lie Depression, Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Heart attack, Paralysis etc.

So what are the ways to maintain WLB?

As we know that there is neither any medicine nor shortcut for maintaining WLB. Apparently we can’t expect someone else to help us maintaining WLB because that fact is WLB is different for everyone. The priority of different aspect of our life differs from person to person.  So the first and foremost thing is to find what is the ideal WLB for individual based on his/her likes, dislikes, family and financial condition and other priorities in life.

While thinking for it one must also consider some of the barrier that usually creates difficulty in maintaining WLB and creates frustration and disappointment. The common barriers are Time, Stress, Dual career family, Lack of support from family, seniors, Peers, Subordinates etc.

As discussed earlier there are three aspects of WLB known as Work Life Triangle which consists of three aspects namely Work, Relationship and Self care.

Work

Work is not where you go “but what you do” .

So how do we go about achieving the Work-Life Balance?

No shortcut or medicine

Each person has his/ her own formula defining the composition of career, family, friends and self into their integrated whole.

Dream

When people's lives are out of balance they are unable to identify the obvious options for themselves and their families.

Be Selfish Yourself First

U are no good to anyone if U yourself are indisposed.

Focus on whatever you are doing.

Maximize your productivity at work and don’t let unfinished business carry over into your personal time. Always put in your best effort. Even if it’s not your core competence.

Be Organized

Disorganization is the theft of time.  Try to manage your day, instead of having the day manage you.

Make lists

Use technologies to off load the stress of remembering

Prioritize

Lists invariably become lengthy. Identify those which contribute towards a balance between work and life

Don't procrastinate

Why invite stress to build up. It is only a compounding multiplier leading you in one direction only

Be flexible

Change is imminent. Those who accept this and work around change are the most productive, best-adjusted individuals.  Plan, but do not run your life on a time table. It’s important to priorities, but be mindful that nothing is static.

Don't be a slave to your e-mail or to phone calls

With Technological advances, people’s expectation of response has risen proportionately. The need to be needed is addictive. One needs 'downtime' to refresh mentally, emotionally or physically.

Know your weakness and strengths

Improve your skills as necessary to enhance your productivity and reduce your stress.

Be forgiving, especially of yourself

You are human. You will make mistakes and fall short of the ideal, including your own. Don’t wallow in guilt. Learn from your mistakes.

Set boundaries and learn to say no

Being a good employee, spouse, parent, and friend doesn't mean blindly giving into everyone else's demands and spending all your time and energy doing for others as they dictate.

Team

Chose the right team members, better than yourself,  invest time in the process. Know your team members, colleagues & supervisors, their strengths and weakness. Monitor initial engagements just like a life guard monitors new swimmers. Trust them and delegate, make yourself dispensable, so that u can play a larger role in strategic initiatives and career development of team members. Don’t try to soldier along on your own without asking for help it can only result in a sense of isolation, martyrdom and exhaustion.

Relationship

Personal relationships are the fertile soil from which all advancement...all success... all achievement in real life grows

Don’t let that day come for your loved ones without telling them what they mean to you

Hang out with your family or treasured friends. Talk to them. Listen to them. Understand them. Spending a little time with someone shows that you care, shows that they are important enough that you’ve chosen — out of all the things to do on your busy schedule — to find the time for them.

Value the relationships

Truly connect with lovable ones through good conversation. Many times it’s our actions, not just our words that really speak what our hearts feel.

Self Care – Personal

Taking self care is also one of the most important aspects of life and maintaining WLB.

Take time for yourself

This may sound difficult for people who believe they are in very responsible position … who think they are indispensable. Find opportunities within the busy work schedule

Take more frequent though short breaks

Establish good, supportive relationships, both at work and home.

Try the Home working (tele working) model to address those pressing personal/ family needs.

Worry, but only to the point it helps.

Failed in 10th or 12th… … Don’t worry it’s just the beginning not the ending…

So you are failed in std 10th or 12th, Maybe more than once. You may have been told you have no talent, you are not capable of studying or are never going to "make bright future”. Well don't be discouraged. The following are stories of other people who failed multiple time in their life and were told the same thing or something similar and went on to be major successes! You might just recognize a few:
Henry Ford failed and went broke five times before he finally succeeded.
Charles Darwin, father of the theory of evolution, gave up a medical career and was told by his father, “You care for nothing but shooting, dogs, and rat catching.” In his autobiography, Darwin wrote, “I was considered by my father, a very ordinary boy, rather below the common standard in intellect”
The Vice President of Columbia told this actor that he was never going to make it in the business. The actor - Harrison Ford, who later became the most successful actor, director and producer of Hollywood and winner of lots of awards

Turned down by a recording company saying "We don't like their sound and guitar music is on the way out" They were talking about the Beatles, that later became commercially most successful English Rock band of all time.

Told by a music teacher "as a composer he is hopeless" – Beethoven, who became the most famous and influential composer of all time.

Fired from a newspaper because he "lacked imagination and had no original ideas" - Walt Disney, later whose imagination gave the greatest character of all time “Mickey Mouse” and established the first amusement park of the world that is Disney land which is still considered as number one amusement park of the world.

Told by a teacher he was "too stupid to learn anything". Work was no better, as he was fired from his first two jobs for not being productive enough. Even as an inventor, he made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. Of course, all those unsuccessful attempts finally resulted in the design that worked.  He was none other than Thomas Edison who invented light bulb, phonograph, and motion picture camera because of which we can watch movies today, and became the one of the richest person of the world.

Failed the sixth grade - Winston Churchill who became the best leader of British during the second world war and the only British prime minister to win noble price in literature and also known as father of literature and his literature has now became the syllabus for Arts students.

Wasn't able to speak until he was almost 4 years old and his teachers said he would "never amount to much" - Albert Einstein a world changing scientist who doesn’t need any kind of introduction.

Did poorly in school and failed at running the family farm - Isaac Newton another world changing scientist who doesn’t need any kind of introduction.

Was not allowed to wait on customers in the store he worked in because "he didn't have enough sense" - F. W. Woolworth who later started a retail store by the name of Woolworth’s that became the biggest retail store chain of 20th century.

Was cut from the high school basketball team, went home, locked himself in his room and cried - Michael Jordan who became one of the best national basket ball player of US and owner of the wellknown basket ball team Charlotte Bobcats

Auditioned for All My Children and many other movies and programs and got rejected - Julia Roberts who became the world renowned actress of all time.

Received 30 rejections and the author threw it in the trash. Luckily his wife fished it out again and encouraged him to resubmit it. The book was Carrie - the author Stephen King that became one of the bestseller novel and later a Hollywood movie was made based on this novel.

Bill Gates didn't seem like a shoe-in for success after dropping out of Harvard and starting a failed first business with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen called Traf-O-Data. While this early idea didn't work, Gates' later work did, creating the global empire that is Microsoft.
Steven Spielberg - This household name dropped out of high school and applied to attend film school three times but was unsuccessful due to his C grade average.
Soichiro Honda - The founder of Honda was turned down for an engineering job by Toyota after World War Two.
Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita - These two were the founders of Sony, but one of their first products was an electric rice cooker. They only sold 100 or so of these cookers because they tended to burn rice rather than cook it.
These brothers battled depression and family illness before starting the bicycle shop that would lead them to experimenting with flight. After numerous attempts at creating flying machines, several years of hard work, and tons of failed prototypes, the brothers finally created a plane that could get airborne and stay there. These brothers were none other than Orville and Wilbur Wright who are well known as Wright brothers.

It's hard to imagine film without the iconic Charlie Chaplin, but his act was initially rejected by Hollywood studio chiefs because they felt it was a little too nonsensical to ever sell.

As you can see, these are just a few of the people who tried again and again after getting failure in their life and refused to listen to the criticism or the "experts".

They succeeded because despite their failures they never gave up which eventually led them to succeed.

If they could do it - so can you!
Unfortunately in our society or we can say in our system, it is considered that students who secure good marks in exam are intelligent and those who can’t get good marks or fail are poor. Well, honestly speaking it is not the fact. It is not compulsory that each and every student must be good in study and must get good marks. Some time it depends on the interest level of the student that he/she may not be good in study but may be expert in some other things like sports, arts, drawing, music, dance etc.
Getting educated doesn’t mean getting good marks. Marks are important but the most important part is KNOWLEDGE. Marks reflect the outcome of the answer sheet, but Knowledge reflects the person. Having knowledge and getting failed is not bad, but getting failed with lack of knowledge is bad.
However, as we know, nowadays education is an inevitable part of our life. For any person, be it any career, be it any position, education is must. But does that mean if you fail in your school your career is over??? Well, that’s not the fact. You have to understand that it is just the beginning and not the ending. If you fail once don’t get disappointed with failure because life doesn’t end, try again and this time try to give your best shot
There is always a better way for you it’s just you need to work more to get it. Have a positive approach to the goal. Go get the thing if not got it earlier.
Never give up believing in yourself!!!

2010, The year of Scams and Controversies

It seems that this year has been more of scams and controversies from the congress government (Well, I don't support BJP either) and some other organisations.
It almost started with CWG scam by our honourable Mr. Suresh Kalmadi. Well I can’t imagine how a person can even think of such a big scam in an international sports event without even thinking of the reputation of India globally.
Before the flame diffused, other scam about adarsh society released which was performed by the then CM of Maharashtra the Great Mr. Ashok Chavan. This scam was that effective that it led to CM loose his position.
The third was an ongoing unsubstantiated scam which was then inveterate and proved to be the biggest scam in the history of world. Well I am sure you guessed what I am talking about, it is none other than 2G spectrum scam worth Rs, 176000 crores (One lakh seventy-six thousand crore rupees only) by our Ex-Telecom Minister, A. Raja (It is this scam because of which he got the title "Ex" before "Telecom Minister"). You must go through he CAG audit report at http://www.cag.gov.in/html/reports/civil/2010-11_19PA/contents.htm
Now if congress leaders are working in giving such great gifts (scams) to the public of India, how BJP can be out of race. This fact was proved with another land scam by yeddyurappa, the CM of Karnataka.
Now CBI had just started investigating about these scams, the other burden came onto their head which was of Home Loan Scam created by our bank employees. Now this proves that it’s not just the duty of politician to do such scams. Even some private companies and their employees are providing equal contribution to it.
Well it seems there has been hard time for investigating agency CBI and their governing body CVC. The fingers were directly pointed towards them mentioning their inefficiency in dealing with such scams. It is not yet clear that whether they are incapable of investigating and delivering results or they are unable to perform their duty under political pressure (Well, after all CBI have to investigate them in such scams). Even the CVC (Central Vigilance commissioner), P.J.Thomas, who is heading the governing body CVC, is directly questioned for the failure of CBI.
Anyways, though CVC and CBI are being questioned for their inefficiency, many new names found to be linked with these scams by them. These people are not politician (they are surely very close to politicians) but are people from corporate world. There are many people involved but the biggest name is Nira Radia.
Alas! This was not the end of controversies. Congress again became the victim of new controversy when WikiLeaks cable published that Rahul Gandhi had told US ambassador Timothy Roemer that growth of "radicalised Hindu groups" could pose a bigger threat to India than activities of groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba. This is still a fresh ongoing scam.
I think I missed one of the most important and a very first scam of 2010 which is IPL 2010. IPL, the cricket show, proved a big mesh of money and politics. The speech war started between Shashi Tharoor and Lalit Modi which turned into a big political drama. The whole event showed that how the use of black money, power and politics is being done in cricket. Here Lalit Modi lose his position and reputation as well.
Moreover, the scams mentioned above actually don’t cover every scam and controversies, though the major of them are covered. We can surely say that year 2010 has proved to be the year of scams. Now 2010 is about to finish and I am not expecting any more scam or controversy during the last few days of the year. Though I am sure we are going to get many new scams next year, but for this year it's enough.
